High-Functioning Autism in Adults: Understanding Level One ASD

If you’ve ever wondered whether high-functioning autism might describe your experience, you’re not alone. Many adults reach a point where they begin to question long-standing patterns, like sensory sensitivities, social fatigue, or difficulty with transitions, and seek clarity. As an adult autism specialist, I work with neurodivergent adults across the U.S. to help explore these questions through online autism assessments that are respectful, affirming, and tailored to your lived experience.

What Is High-Functioning Autism?

“High-functioning autism” is an informal term often used to describe individuals who meet criteria for Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) but can manage most aspects of daily life independently. While still common in everyday language, this term has become outdated and overly vague.

Instead, the DSM-5 (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders) introduced a more accurate framework in 2013: autism is now described in terms of levels of support needed, with Level One ASD typically corresponding to what was once called “high-functioning.”

Traits of Level One Autism in Adults

Adults with Level One ASD often have strong verbal skills and average or above-average intelligence. You might excel in areas like logic, memory, or technical subjects. But that doesn’t mean life is without challenges. Common traits include:Difficulty interpreting social cues or unspoken rulesStruggles with transitions or changes in routineIntense focus on specific interests or hobbiesSensory sensitivities (light, sound, touch, smell)Social fatigue or anxiety, especially in group settingsThese traits are often masked or misunderstood, leading many adults to go undiagnosed or misdiagnosed for years.
